No one likes to do their taxes, but for millions of Americans, TurboTax makes the process a lot easier.
For the 2014 filing season, however, Intuit changed the desktop version of its best-selling TurboTax Deluxe -– and it’s getting some negative reviews on Amazon.com. TurboTax Deluxe for desktops no longer includes full Q&A sessions for schedules C, D, or E –- the forms needed to report income from investments, self-employment and rental property. To get that full functionality, users must spend an additional $30 to $40 to upgrade to other versions of TurboTax.
Consumer advocate Edgar Dworsky, founder of ConsumerWorld.org – who uses TurboTax Deluxe – was so upset when he found out about this “downsizing” of the product that he posted a Warning for TurboTax Users on his website on Tuesday.
Intuit says it made the changes to provide “consistent product functionality” for its various platforms. This year’s changes to the desktop were already part of the online version. TurboTax spokesperson Colleen Gatlin told NBC News the company has been “very proactive” in letting people know what’s going on. “The majority of the customers who understand the changes are OK with it,” she said.
