Artists and celebrities have always sought refuge in Sneden's Landing — all the way back to the first president.
Legend has it that Gen. George Washington may have visited The Little House, an 1810 historic home, or at least the neighboring Big House in this idyllic and historic community 25 miles north of Manhattan.
“It’s about as close to the city as you can get and still feel like you’re in the country,” said Rob Moore, the listing agent.
The area, with its mix of history and luxury, is something of a sanctuary for its creative and wealthy residents. Bill Murray, Orson Wells, Bjork, Al Pacino and Diane Sawyer are among those who have called the neighborhood home.
At 2,473 square feet with four bedrooms and three bathrooms, The Little House is not little. Its name comes from its proximity to The Big House, a 1770 English Manor located next door.
The Little House’s charming historical details, like a brick fireplace and rough-hewn ceiling beams in the dining room make it one of the most iconic homes in Sneden's Landing. But a mid-‘90s remodel to the back of the house means it has a large, modern kitchen with Viking and Bosch appliances.
The original portion of the home is on the National Register of Historic Places, and Moore has a binder’s worth of stories about the home. Among its famous visitors are folk singers Pete Seeger and Woody Guthrie.
