Microsoft announced massive layoffs on Thursday, saying it will cut 18,000 jobs in one of the largest job cuts in the company's 39-year history. The layoffs equal about 14 percent of the company's workforce, as it cuts the size of its recent Nokia acquisition and trims other operations. In a letter to his employees, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella announced that the company would be cutting 18,000 jobs in the next year. "We are moving now to start reducing the first 13,000 positions, and the vast majority of employees whose jobs will be eliminated will be notified over the next six months," Nadella wrote. "It's important to note that while we are eliminating roles in some areas, we are adding roles in certain other strategic areas." Microsoft had 127,000 employees as of June 5.
